Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 14 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Cielia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: It was hard to marry a sustainability passion and business passion and then end up in law, but this [course] was the piece that made it all fit together.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 13 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Writing is something that I love doing, so I didn't really take Writing Intensives to check the box. It becomes more about my schedule than what's in the syllabus, I don't mind the writing. I've taken some really specific Writing Intensives that were very shaped at building a career so like resume, cover letter, memos, and that was actually really important.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 12 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Trying to get into law school you really have to set yourself apart and to be able to do something like that you have to be able to think outside of the box and inside of the box... you have to balance both, and that class really taught me how to do that. None of us had guidelines, so we all had to think outside of the box for how to conceptualize the project and then we also had to work collaboratively with each other and, you know, different personalities.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 11 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: I'll never forget where my path started and it really started with this rain garden abstract. So I really hope that I can see this through at the University so that it can become a learning tool for other students and not just a tool, but an inspiration for other students to really see their writing turn into something.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 10 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Hawaiʻi is my home... I stepped off the plane and said this is my new home... I think [diversity is] great, I mean why does anyone think they're a privileged ethnicity? [Living in a diverse area is] a great wakeup call for everybody. There are issues, there's traffic, everyone's talking about GMO's, but there's a lot of places to make a difference too.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 9 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: My aspiration is to bridge business with environmental advocacy. I'd like to pursue an MBA/JD dual degree with an environmental certificate so that I can further serve the community of Hawaiʻi when I'm finished with college... You can't do anything these days without being a decent writer.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 8 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: The people I worked with on this project are still friends and collaborators today. As far as relationships with faculty it really made me realize that the people who support you and mentor you are really the people who are the stepping stones into your next phase in life or down your path... Professor Cusick was definitely that with this course for me... I see it not just as personal passion, but what I learned in this course will definitely matriculate to my children and I hope will instil passion in them to continue.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 7 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: I'm kind of embarrassed to admit now that I wasn't aware of the whole how we got our water in Hawaiʻi until this class. I didn't know that we were so self-sustained on a water table and there was this huge issue connected to it depleting.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 6 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: It really changed my focus on what should be expected out of academia. For so long institutions have taught by the book and it's becoming really obvious that maybe we need to take a bigger view at education and where people should be able to work or not work or feel comfortable in writing. You don't come out of college and go to work and your boss gives you an outline of exactly what they want from you. It doesn't work that way and I think that it's really important to be able to flow from academia into a career.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in a sophomore honors seminar, clip 5 of 14(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morris, Celia; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: I can honestly say that I don't recall any of them being weak or unsuccessful. I think in some capacity it really helped the writer recognize place-based issues and take ownership of where they can really make a difference. I think I'm more interested in writing and so that passion follows through, but I've had a lot of teachers kick things back and tell me I could do better.
