Brief excerpt from interview: I was raised in the mainland and everything there is basically mainland textbook and not really down to the local level like over here where the history is very different and varied, and the Pacific is kind of viewed as a whole... It's interesting how, through all my Writing Intensives... how my writing has shifted from being kind of mainland oriented to being local and oriented here.

Brief excerpt from interview: [I would suggest to other students...] Don't be afraid of Writing Intensive courses... It's how much you enjoy the subject that you're on will reflect whether or not you really enjoy doing the Writing Intensive projects.

Brief excerpt from interview: I learned a lot. I really respect Dr. Zaleski... [This course] will stay with me, I think, through everything... my time here at the university is gonna stay with me. I'm really appreciative of what I learned. That's also shaped why I want to come back. I want to give back what was given to me, to the island.

Brief excerpt from interview: I want to be a doctor... and come back here and help out. I think I'm just so set on that now based on what I've seen and how attainable that is for me... I wanna come back here because I know the layout really well... I've actually always wanted to author or coauthor a research journal.

Brief excerpt from interview: I've seen a lot more of [this place] than I thought existed in the first place... I'm probably adopted Hawaiian/Asian because I've done so many things I never would have had the chance to or would have tried on the mainland... I don't regret the evolution into what I wanted to do... I feel I have more motivation to do what I want to do... Being here I was able to grow up a little being away from my family and on my own.

Brief excerpt from interview: The current challenge I have is where to start... My drafting processes are usually kind of flawed... [Starting a paper is about] a comfort level, being confident when I'm writing... I feel like if I start off weak, the whole paper's going to be weak.

Brief excerpt from interview: I write better as part of a collective... It's a lot more daunting to write a paper when you have to collect all the information yourself... A lot of the things that we were told was what the farmers knew... It's making sure we represent the information in the context it was meant... If it's individual, I have my own style of writing, so as long as I'm able to represent what I know, in my way, then I think it's pretty successful.
