Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 12 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: It's still a diamond in the rough. I have to edit [my paper], but yes I was able to actually use a local, Hawaiʻi-oriented problem and relate it to the class... It's the conservation of the Hawaiian monk seal and how a lot of discourses of what society believes are kind of being a big hindrance to that.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 11 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: See [a Writing Intensive course] not so much as a class where you get an A, but see it as a way that you can develop your writing; because writing is a very important skill, so use that opportunity to really really cultivate your skills versus just meeting due dates and doing the bare minimum.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 10 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: This was the first class that applied to real life I guess so I believe I'll never forget this class just from the fact that it was an eye-opening experience. I keep using that phrase, but that's what the class was: eye-opening.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 9 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: After taking Geography 330 I think everyone has an obligation to make some sort of positive change around them because there are a lot of problems in the world and [this class has] wisened me up to it so now I feel like I have a general obligation to be helpful...Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 8 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: [My perspective] towards Native Hawaiians [is different] now, not having the stereotypes that clouded my eyes... I think toward Native Hawaiians, it would be a lot different from just treating them as any other people versus treating them as very special people that have special ties to this place.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 7 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: [Yes, I learned a lot about] Hawaiʻi, especially from the serving learning project we did... and what happened during the sovereignty movement in the 1970s in Hālawa Valley... [T]his class is very oriented towards studying multiple different countries and continents so I thought it was very a big eye-opener... What happened in Hawaiʻi is very parallel to what's happening to other countries around the world... I'm studying political economy: how richer nations take advantage of poorer nations... [I]t's out of sight, out of mind for the most part, but actually being there, seeing [people affected by it], seeing the resentment or just other feelings people have it made it much more real.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 6 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: [The course] let me know what's going on in the world. All the injustice, inequality, how the world is a big maelstrom of fighting for resources. It showed me, aside from the borders of the United States, what's going on outside. [It] really made me aware of the whole situation.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 5 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: If anyone were to read [my paper] I could get my point across... maybe change some of their perspective... have a profound effect on the reader.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 4 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: This was actually practical experience we got. We actually visited sites and met with people and talked with them and... I was able to extract that and put it into the paper so it was pretty neat to be able to do that... [The learning] was more towards Native Hawaiian culture where they don't really write, they just listen and then imbue that in what you do in everyday life versus jotting it down on paper and just committing it to memory just for a grade.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Geography, clip 3 of 12(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Yun, Seok H.; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Mainly I write a very analytical format... geared toward non-fiction so again the writing came out in that format, but studying about Hawaiian culture... was the biggest challenge... A lot of Native Hawaiian culture is based on not learning in a classroom setting more learning as you live life... [Native Hawaiian culture] encompasses a lot so it can't be put inside a classroom and I had a trouble of getting every aspect of Native Hawaiian culture into a paper.
