Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 13 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: It's easier to write, I think, when you're interested in the subject... I feel like my writing kind of got stronger because I knew the organization they were looking for but I was able to incorporate more ideas and use outside resources.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 12 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Moving to Oregon, there's not a lot of in and out of new students, so they were all raised with the same curriculum, same ideas... The teachers had to approach me and kind of point out 'this is what we look for here'... I think I kind of had a more well-rounded perspective... I was able to look at it from different views... I did it one way in one place, another way in another place.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 11 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: I think [the course] had a big impact... I think I'll always have something tied to the swine farm.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 10 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: I have a few experiences that are different from the majority applying... Having [the Animal Science advisors] be able to work with me on my personal statement kind of helped me to elaborate on my experiences that set me apart... I think writing is always going to be an important part of anyone's career... If I can't think of how I want to do something, I'll go for a light run to just let the ideas flow.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 9 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: Working in a smaller group definitely almost forces you to form the relationships you wouldn't otherwise form... We're all up in agricultural science... so you're kind of away from the majority of people, you're seeing the same faces day in and day out, which I kind of prefer... I feel more comfortable with going... up there because I feel more comfortable with it.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 8 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: It's a little different than other courses... as far as the resources Hawaiʻi has to offer to farmers... I gotta tie in animal science to Hawaiʻi and its resources... Here [on Oʻahu] we're so limited on our resources, but [the Big Island has] so much land compared to here... Here I feel like everything is more... busy whereas the Big Island is more laid back.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 7 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: As a person, I didn't really have any exposure to pigs... I learned a lot... I got that exposure to swine... As a writer, it was writing every other week... it was a consistent, term-long project. [The writing projects] all kind of went together, but just for the semester it was clumped into sections... We spent a long time reviewing that final report.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 6 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: The weakest part [of my writing]... is just getting started. We weren't given one set guideline of 'this is what we need to have.' It was just general. We had the farmer's perspective... He would give three or four suggestions to help us focus one way or another.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 5 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: The strongest part of it was the peer review... We had the group's ideas, and we also had [the instructors] giving us suggestions... The beginning was a struggle... one way someone else learned might not be something that someone else was taught, so once we were on the same page about how we wanted to review it all together then it kind of evened out I guess.Item Student interview for Place-Based WAC/WID writing instruction in Animal Science, clip 4 of 13(2015) Place-based WAC/WID Hui; Morrison, Kaleigh; Henry, JimBrief excerpt from interview: When you have to go out in the field and come back it help you memorize the information because it helps you learn better... We took notes, classical pen and paper, we also took videos, pictures... The internship course was more focused on me as an individual... whereas this course... was more focused on the farmer and his production.
