Writing Assignment Used for This Interview

Throughout the semester you will produce 10 poems: “I remember” poem, two epistolary poems (Letter to Home, Letter from Home), sonnet, villanelle, instructions poem, walking poem, prose poem, and two documentary poems.

You will select a poem from this semester’s readings and embody the spirit of the work in a performance mid-March. Memorize the poem and commit to your performance.
You will select and perform one of your own mapping poems on the final day of class.

Mapping Home project
- Final portfolio that includes the following materials:

Poetics of place (4-5 pages, double-spaced)
Revisions of 10 poems
One “How to Write a Poem”

Brief excerpt from interview: I used a brochure from the Honolulu Museum of Art... I was bitter at the time ... 'Do not inhale silica dust because you can get silicosis' And since I had become bitter, I was saying, 'Don't be around me, because I think I don't have a home... Brief excerpt from interview: [I took a Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Issues class.] It was really interesting, and it definitely made me embrace more of the Hawaiian culture. I went to Maui over Spring Break and that's helped me to embrace Hawaiian culture... The names of the streets is really what got me. [The street names] are more Hawaiian... I really like just trying to read the streets and seeing it all around.

Brief excerpt from interview: There was a poem about the walk between my apartment and campus ... was struggling with that, wrote, but then left it ... I didn't perform it in class, so I didn't have feedback ... I didn't want to think about how I was living at the time ... my other classes, I had other stuff to focus on ... as a person the course changed me to think more about the concept of home ... opening up my mind to different ideas of home ... as a writer, if you love writing, just write ... it has gotten me to write a lot more ... I type it on my phone when something comes to mind ... writing outside of class ... helped me get through losing friends ... it has helped me to revise ... a classmate helped me out a lot [on a different paper] to see what reading I needed to do ...

Brief excerpt from interview: As a person, [this course] has definitely changed me because it made me... think more about the concept of home and what that really means to me... I have thought about different ways [to define home such as] a place, or a group of people, or the way that made me feel... It kind of opened up my mind to different ideas of home. That [class] has gotten me to write more.
