Writing Assignment Used for This Interview
The course is also about the performance of that music and poetry and as such will explore how our music relates to hula, formal protocols, and daily life, through creative projects that will showcase our music at the end-of-year Hōʻike. While this course will not require every student to sing, dance, or play and instrument, every student will find a way to contribute to the performance of music and dance in some capacity, and part of your grade will depend upon it.

The syllabus is about the history of Hawaiʻi, but focusing on mele (songs), oli (chants), and... Hawaiian composition. What was interesting to me was... we started [the semester by learning about] the ancient days where oli was created and did a little timeline to modern and to present day. I liked that we talked about the oli or the mele and it was like [a] history [class] as well, because we talked about...what was happening and why the person... composed the mele or oli.
