Item type: Item , Beyond Digital Technology: Synthesizing Micro-Foundations for Manufacturing Organizations' Transforming Capability(2024-01-03) Carlsson, LinnéaThis single case explores micro-foundations of traditional manufacturing organizations transforming capability to expand the understanding of organizing and continuously supporting an organization in adopting digital technologies. Data collection consisted of five focus groups and nine interviews. In total, 30 unique informants participated. Findings show how informants experience the organization to hem potential conversations due to the organizational structure and the need to communicate between functions. Hence, the potential positive effects of introducing digital technologies might be lost due to not recognizing the need for nonlinear clusters of individuals, groups, and in the end – the organization. By illuminating micro-foundations in the transforming capability, this study shows the need to recognize structural and social aspects in the strategic work of implementing digital technologies.Item type: Item , Co-designing ESG Platform Functionality: A Digital Platform Ecosystem Approach(2024-01-03) Plugge, Albert; De Reuver, Mark; Vieru, DragosThe concept of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), has captivated the attention of firms and academics, driven by an EU directive for firms to report ESG. Digital platforms fulfill an essential role to support organizations to manage their ESG initiatives. Since ESG disclosure standards are ambiguous, designing a digital platform for ESG is challenging. The design of ESG platform functionality is hindered as essential knowledge is fragmented across various stakeholders. In this paper, we show how a platform owner, complementor, and platform user co-design ESG platform module features by applying an ecosystem approach. Situated in a socio-technical context, we apply Action Based Research (ADR) that includes a cyclic process of design iterations in an actual real-life setting. We identified ten challenges that may occur in the design process, and we explain which strategies have been applied to overcome the challenges.Item type: Item , Outsourcing in the Age of Machine Learning: How Inscrutable Shared Understanding Drives Outsourcing Relationship Success(2024-01-03) Mayer, Anne-Sophie; Kotlarsky, Julia; Oshri, IlanAnchored in the IS outsourcing literature, shared understanding between the client firm and the provider has been consistently reported to support successful outsourcing engagement. A lack of shared understanding, on the other hand, is linked to deteriorating performance. In this study, we examined how shared understanding changed throughout an outsourcing engagement between a Bank (the client) and a Machine Learning (ML) service provider. Based on a longitudinal qualitative study of ML service outsourcing, from both client and provider perspectives, we found that in the early stage of the outsourcing relationship the parties bestowed shared understanding. However, in the later stages a different form of shared understanding evolved in which the ML provider intentionally limited information about how the ML model works, while the client ‘blackboxed’ the technology, while focusing on increasing the supply of data required to train the ML model and verifying its outcome. We theorize that ‘inscrutable shared understanding’ emerged in this ML outsourcing service and point out three practices pursued by the client and provider to support this new form of shared understanding.Item type: Item , Generation Z Entering IT – Navigating Expectations for Employers and Employees(2024-01-03) Prommegger, Barbara; Kraußer, Christoph; Straeussl, Alexander; Arpaci, Selin; Trost, Andrea; Krcmar, HelmutRecruiting Generation Z IT professionals (born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s) presents unique challenges for organizations in the fast-paced digital era. This paper employs a cluster analysis approach to gain insights into Generation Z IT professionals’ employer and workplace expectations, enabling organizations to develop targeted strategies for effective digital talent attraction and employment. Analyzing the expectations of 370 current IT students, we highlight three distinct clusters within the sample: Success-Driven Prestige Seekers, Challenge-Driven Autonomy Seekers, and Money-Driven Security Seekers. We show how each cluster prefers different employer and workplace characteristics and illustrate paths for organizations to tailor their recruitment strategies for each cluster. This paper contributes valuable insights into the preferences and motivations of Generation Z IT professionals and provides practical recommendations for organizations seeking to build a talented, digital workforce by integrating Generation Z IT professionals.Item type: Item , Why Managers Don’t Manage: An Interpretive Case Study of Information Systems Adoption Management(2024-01-03) Falch, Cecilie; Krancher, OliverAlthough there is a large amount of research on adoption and benefits management, we know surprisingly little about how and why managers manage adoption of enterprise systems. By conducting an interpretive case study, we explore managers’ perceptions of adoption management. Through semi- structured interviews, we uncover that two levels of management expressed surprisingly little action to influence users’ adoption towards desired benefits once the application is live. The data analysis found a mental rationalisation pattern that justified the managers’ (lack of) adoption action. We identify these ostensive and performative structures as a project- centric mindset to highlight how the rigid boundaries of project completion are prioritised, thus challenging holistic adoption management.Item type: Item , Work System Quality Assessment: A TIHPS Grounded Measurement Model(2024-01-03) Walke, Fabian; Aden, Anneke; Winkler, Till J.Work systems are natural units of analysis for thinking about systems in organizational settings. Literature has not yet considered work systems from a quality perspective, whereby quality can be approached through various perspectives (e.g. user- or value-oriented perspective). This paper aims to combine work system theory with a context-independent quality assessment instrument, in order to make the quality of work systems measurable and to better solve problems that arise in work systems (e.g. IT skill shortage). For this purpose, a literature review, seven qualitative expert interviews and a quantitative empirical validation with a total of 155 IT professionals were conducted. As a result, a measurement model to assess work system quality is developed. The results show significant correlations with work output satisfaction, employer attractiveness, high quality emphasis of organizations and concepts of ideal employers, as well as valuable insights regarding multiple factors that capture work system quality.Item type: Item , Social Practices of Creating and Using UX Artifacts in Agile Organizations(2024-01-03) Rukonić, Luka; Fastrez, Pierre; Kieffer, SuzanneThis study conceptualizes UX activities as social practices emerging from how agile software development (ASD) team members create and use UX artifacts in a real-world software development setting. We sought to understand what social practices emerge when integrating UX and ASD activities in an organization. To this end, we observed the use of three UX artifacts: affinity diagrams, personas, and prototypes. Our findings showed that two social practices were established: the creation and use of UX artifacts. We provided insights into how ASD stakeholders possessing different competencies attach meanings to materials (i.e., UX artifacts) and thus form social practices.
