dc.description.abstract Forty years ago Arthur Lyman Dean delivered the University of Hawaii's commencement address in which he described the institution's college era. His discourse, later published as the Historical Sketch of the University of Hawaii, remained the standard work on the College of Hawaii. Later accounts not only suffered from brevity and inaccuracy, but they also continued to portray the College without reference to the Island community. This thesis attempts to place the College in proper perspective and provide a basis for future studies by filling in gaps and correcting errors found in the present state of University chronology.
