Abstract
Brief excerpt from interview: [This class] was a requirement for graduation. The syllabus is about the history of Hawaiʻi, but focusing on mele (songs), oli (chants), and... Hawaiian composition. What was interesting to me was... we started [the semester by learning about] the ancient days where oli was created and did a little timeline to modern and to present day. I liked that we talked about the oli or the mele and it was like [a] history [class] as well, because we talked about...what was happening and why the person... composed the mele or oli.

This item includes a segment of a student interview in a Writing Intensive course in Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The interview was conducted in 2014, and in this clip the interviewee is responding to the question 'Why did you take this course?'
