    Gamified Career Paths: The Talent Tree as a Model for Human Resource Development

The model emphasizes scalable career progression, enhances employee engagement, and addresses ethical challenges in gamification. We explore the application of this model in HR practices, demonstrating its potential to modernize employee development and align work with evolving digital competencies. This paper highlights the benefits and obstacles of adopting game-based models for career development, suggesting that such integration can transform traditional talent management into a more dynamic and interactive process.

    Shifting Competency Requirements for IT Professionals in the Digital Transformation: A Competency Transformation Process Model

    The digital transformation leads to changes in technology, the nature of work and value creation, which affect the competency requirements for IT professionals who play an active and formative role in this change process. Consequently, they are compelled to further develop their competencies initially necessitating an examination of the status quo of competency requirements. Through a structured literature review of 82 studies, we examine the state of research regarding the competencies of IT professionals and abductively derive a Competency Transformation Process Model. The model embeds the process of transforming competencies into the digital transformation process. This framework describes the interdependencies between (1) the influencing factors, (2) the competency reassessment process, (3) the required actions and strategies, (4) the resulting outcomes, and (5) the individual and social competency-enhancing factors.

    Digital Working Environments. The De-Socialization of Workplaces

    Professional interaction is being transformed by digitization of communication and decision making. Both the increasing use of video conferences and the launch ChatGPT are at risk of contributing to the de-socializing work. Based on recent research on video conferencing and the use of AI, we identify dimensions of professional interaction, which are affected by this development. It is the very competitive interaction, which allows workers to excel. This interaction is diminished by digitization of communication and decision making. With reference to, theories on competition, work ethics and psychological wellbeing, we suggest rating workplaces according to the extent to which they satisfy these needs. Such a rating system would identify criteria and methods for improving organizations’ ability to integrate employees in collective agency. At the same time, this rating would require debates with ideological connotations regarding the legitimacy of competitive meritocracy. We suggest that scholars should engaging in such debates.

    Creating Mutual Understanding in Human-Machine Collaboration: A Linguistic and “Intercultural” Endeavor

    In the era of digital transformation, companies are increasingly confronted with the challenge of organizing human-machine collaboration to ensure seamless and efficient operations. This paper explores the evolving landscape of organizational functions, where the convergence of human resources and automation resources is giving rise to a new productivity resources management function. As organizations adapt to the digitalization of work, the need for an integrated approach to managing productivity resources—whether human, machine, or a combination of both—becomes paramount. Central to this integrated approach is the role of language as part of an “intercultural” communication between humans and machines. By examining the linguistic and intercultural dimensions of mutual understanding in human-machine collaboration, this paper systematizes the conceptual tasks ahead that have to be strategically incorporated into companies’ digitalization of work initiatives.
