    Understanding Consumers’ Attitudes towards a Smartphone Application to Reduce Food Waste

    This paper explores a novel approach to address the problem of food waste in private households through a smartphone application. Employing a design science approach, an app prototype was developed as an instantiation with basic functionality. The prototype was evaluated by conducting a usability test and a consumer survey (N=520) to understand consumers’ needs and requirements to increase their willingness to use such applications. Our findings reveal that younger generations are more likely to use the app and are more open to sharing and trusting information about real best-before dates of food products than older generations. Furthermore, the app concept resonates more with men than women. Feedback from consumers highlights a significant interest in a feature that could determine the shelf life of unpacked goods and new features, e.g., a chatbot to analyze food freshness.

    A Consumer Study on the Acceptance of Digitized Packaging for Food Quality Assessment

    Intelligent packaging can assist with reducing food waste and improving food safety. While indicators already provide the current food quality, sensors combined with machine learning techniques could predict the remaining shelf life and provide recommendations to maintain food quality. Thus, information from intelligent packaging must be transmitted and evaluated. However, successfully deploying such a concept requires the consumers’ acceptance. Therefore, we conducted a consumer survey, investigating the attitudes and preferences of 242 participants regarding the use and connectivity of smarter technologies to evaluate food quality. The results revealed that 85% of the participants perceive a need for technological innovations to reduce food waste. Subsequently, we propose three approaches. Regarding information display, consumers prefer to show information directly on the packaging, via integrated displays in refrigerators, or a smartphone application. The information should provide the remaining shelf life, a scale, or a color indication.

    Discovering the Circular Economy as a Problem Space for Information Systems Research

    The circular economy (CE) is a vital sustainability concept that requires well-designed information systems (IS). However, the IS scholars’ understanding of the CE is emerging, and its problems are fragmented and not fully understood yet. This work presents a qualitative study of 20 organizations to explore future research on digital CE. The results describe stakeholders, governance, organizational resources, technical resources, constraints, and opportunities of CE digitalization. The findings indicate that CE is not yet another research context but could impact IS research and designs while IS are shaping and scaling the CE.

    Sustainability Design Principles: The Greening of an Organization

    Using action research methodology, this research applies sustainability design principles in developing digital sustainability designs for a public procurement agency. The practical results indicate a design for continuous process of sustainability goal setting activities, “greening” rather than “green.” This process results in an organization that is continuously resetting its green objectives; never fully satisfied by its green achievements, it is always seeking to adopt the next green goals on the horizon. These results are an extension of the use of continuous quality improvement in managing green and sustainable information systems. Nevertheless, a greening organizational process provides material evidence for satisfying EU sustainability criteria while placing the organization in a state of perpetual green leadership.
