Abstract
Multispectral remote sensing is an important method of deriving water depth in the nearshore environment. This study used Worldview-2 (WV-2) spectral bands and compared depth estimates calculated from four WV-2 spectral bands [coastal (425nm), blue (480nm), yellow (585-625 nm), and red (1080 nm)], and used Light Detection and Range (LiDAR) bathymetry depth measurements in the nearshore water up to 25 meters. The main objective of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of high spatial and spectral resolution image data on water depth measurements using Dr. Richard Stumpf’s bathymetry band-ratio transformation model. The study site was the Hanauma Bay Marine Sanctuary located on the south shore of Oahu, Hawaiʻi. Because the coral reef, sea grass, and other bottom types in this area influenced the linear relationship between water reflectance and depth, the bathymetric ratio model was applied in two parts: light and dark bottom. The ratio transformation model was tested to effectively derive nearshore water depth from 0 to 25 meters.
