Abstract

Description

Genre: Medicine/huru: Maria Meti Wakene performing 'huru kero diu' healing on a baby in Mata mere. Symptoms: ill, crying, moving body back forth in the night (often children) etc. Materials in cure: bamboo (diu) and paddy grains, areca betel (sirih pinang). The chewed mixture is put from the forehead until the navel. This huru uses a young shoot of bamboo. Symptoms: ill, crying, moving body back forth in the night (often children, baby in this case) etc. Materials in cure: bamboo pipe 'pela' and paddy grains, areca betel (sirih pinang). The chewed mixture is applied from the forehead down until the navel. See file SD1-183 about the same 'huru kero diu', with more annotations; transcripts, translations. Bega's and Meti's baby suffered from some kind of anxiety. Or was there a connection with the Palu'e baby rituals? Recorded in Mata mere 3 April -17 when I visited the island for a week and stayed two nights nextdoor to Bega & Meti's house. There is also a PDF-file with a few images.
