This item includes a segment of an instructor interview in a Writing Intensive course in Management at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The interview was conducted in 2013, and in this clip the interviewee is responding to the question 'When you designed [a designated writing assignment], what goal(s) did you have for student writing performances and class dynamics related to them?'
Brief excerpt from interview: If you say writing does not reflect me, what you are missing is writing reflects your thinking, so one of the things I expect them to learn is thinking, and in a way writing helps crystallize their thinking . . . You should be able to say in fewer words the same idea, no repetition, because if you are repeating you are wasting someone's time . . . if you are going to be writing business reports . . . so those ideas come through writing, and I think it's probably the best way to teach . . . I gave you a format, so you can be creative in the format, to respond to student critique of allowing creativity.
