Abstract
A. peculiar circumoral organ in a pelagic bolitaenid octopus
luminesced brilliantly when treated with H2O2. This is the first confirmed
luminescent organ In an octopus. Similar organs are found only in females of
Eledonella pygmaea , Japetella diaphana (sensu lato) approaching sexual
matunty. The luminescent organs may function to attract mates.
