Abstract
This is one of my first creative nonfiction pieces I’ve ever written, and when pressed to
choose a topic I could think of nothing else to base it on than one of the most significant
muses in my life: my mother. This piece explores topics such as generational expectation
and the notion of going back to your roots, which I’ve learned can be useful as a shift
of perspective. This work is essentially a reflection on visiting my mother’s hometown in
Russia for the first time when I was thirteen years old, a place so rooted with both her and
the rest of my family’s history that it not only changed my outlook on my lineage but also
helped me better understand and appreciate it.
