Abstract

Brief excerpt from interview: When I left school before, all I wanted to do was travel, because I am from Hawaiʻi . . . I wanted to see everything out there, I had the worst case of island fever . . . I did my road trip, lived in other countries . . . I came back. Now, this is my home base, I feel secure here, grounded, and since I feel rooted here, that allows the opportunity for anything to happen . . . I felt like Alaska was very similar to Hawaiʻi, even though very different in terms of temperature, the people there . . . were very friendly with each other, they all knew each other . . . we would go hiking, fishing, it was all about the environment we were in . . . in SanFrancisco, it was all about being in a city . . . I was going to school and did not explore, kind of stayed in the same places that I got comfortable with . . . in Alaska, the locals took us in, they were so warm . . . When I was in Alaska, I did not really think about sustainability.
