Fear of missing out is a recurring issue amongst the younger generation because of our quick and easy access to social media. With access to social media platforms being accessible right at your fingertips, the fear of missing out, and the desire to stay continually connected to others puts college students at risk for social comparison to their peers, which may have effects on one's self esteem, as well as the potential to develop depressive symptoms when they compare themselves to others on the Instagram platform. FOMO could have an effect on college student Instagram users to their psychological well-being when comparing themselves to others. If people turn to Instagram to obtain reassurance, approval, self-gratification, or any other reason when comparing their social media to their peer’s social media and they do not receive it, what effect will that have to their psychological well-being or specifically to their self-esteem, could it cause the individual to develop depressive symptoms, or could it have no effect at all? The current study will provide insight on how Instagram, the fear of missing out and peer social comparison has affected individual’s psychological well-being.
