Abstract

This research study investigates what Manifest fans do upon interacting within the fandom online community, how they choose to interact, and what types of relationships resemble bonded or bridged social capital ties. This qualitative research study utilizes semi-structed in-depth interviews. In this study, 15 in-depth interviews with Manifest fans that partake in fandom interaction through purposive and snowball sampling. This study uses the uses & gratifications theory as a foundational guide to keep in mind when going forth with research. The results of this study found the following: a variety of gratifications, needs, and desires that led Manifesters to join fandom interactions through online communities, similarities found between bonded and bridged social capital ties created amongst the fandom, the role platform use for viewership and fandom interaction play in the interaction and engagement within the fandom, and understand the relationship between social capital relationships and gratifications. Among the response, the biggest conversation revolved around significant role the COVID-19 pandemic played with the types of social capital ties created amongst the fandom, as well as the vast increased number of fandom interactions amongst the online communities.
