dc.description.abstract | Brief excerpt from interview: Coming here and writing about things in Hawaiʻi . . . I struggle with finding my place within the culture and not knowing about the history and traditions . . . wanting to be sensitive to that . . . Not, maybe, having the strongest voice because of a reluctance to own it . . . Taking classes in Ethnic Studies in Hawaiʻi, History . . . a lot of my English classes we dealt with literatures based in the Pacific ocean region . . . just being here and talking to people has been the greatest help to me in understanding what I can write about . . . [Hawaiʻi-Asia-Pacific focus course] is helping me understand where I am geographically, and the past, and why things are the way that they are . . . it's super important as a journalist in Hawaiʻi to know all that. | |
