Genre: Weaving. Theme: Iconography. Supplementary material to article about Palu'e ikat: Nomenclature and Iconography. Meti Du'a, our most senior (>75) weaving consultant from the traditional domain ('tana') of Kéli (also called Tuanggéo) explains the composition and nomenclature of a Palu'e cloth, Widhi matane, in an 11 min clip. This is a part where she tells the names of the motifs on the mother band 'hina'. She had already taught us that once ("But I have already told you that day...") or twice before, a year earlier, but we had reasons to do it again, among else the cloth was different, although of the same type, and yes, it had fewer motifs, eight instead of ten. So Meti thought it was unnnecessary. This particular clip is important because here she makes emphatically clear the oral culture’s (particularly the community of weavers of Palu'e cloths) separation of object and names, which was still too conjoined in our minds. When after she utters the second name in the sequence of motifs, 'mbési', SD (Cawa) asks her what it is, she reacts as if it is a totally unnecessary question ("this Cawa..), if not stupid. "It is the name!!" Meti laughs at the suggestion the word would be short for 'barambési', a tine reptile species. Palu'e actually has 'mbési' in its lexicon, we learned later. It can mean 'squash', likely a loanword from Sikka 'bési'. The recording was shot by a Palu'e friend and assistant, but not primarily for our purposes; it was kept in the memory card of the camera we had given to him for more than a year, until SD brought back the camera for reparation with the memory card, to get other pictures or clips. The clip was shrunk in the conversions so the quality is not super, and the lense was facing the sun while the video was shot. Recorded with a Canon Powershot (no external mics) by Pitu Sopune late in the morning 17 Feb- 18 at Meti Du'a's house, kampong Mata meré.With Stefan Danerek, Magnus Danerek and Pitu Sopune (Ebbe).
