Abstract
It is the purpose of this paper to compare vertical velocity with satellite observed cloud distribution in the tropics, especially with (1) the intertropical maximum cloud band in the Northern Hemisphere paralleling the equator and about 5 degrees north of it throughout the year, (2) the occurrence of the eastern South Pacific intertropical maximum cloud band about 5 degrees away from the equator only in spring, and (3) the curved band of clouds in the western South Pacific.
