Center for Philippine Studies

The Center for Philippine Studies Collection at ScholarSpace is a digital repository for the preservation, documentation, and study of Philippine history, culture, and identity. Developed within the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s long-standing commitment to Philippine Studies, the collection provides researchers, students, educators, and the broader public access to valuable scholarly and historical resources concerning the Philippines and its global communities.

The collection encompasses materials that contribute to a deeper understanding of Philippine historical experiences, cultural traditions, social transformations, migration, language, and the formation of Filipino identities in the Philippines, Hawaiʻi, and the diaspora. As a digital research resource, it facilitates the preservation and dissemination of materials that might otherwise remain dispersed or difficult to access. The collection also reflects the University’s distinguished role in advancing Philippine Studies in the Pacific. Through ScholarSpace, the Center for Philippine Studies extends the reach of these resources and supports continuing scholarship on the Philippines and its diverse historical and cultural legacies.

Created in 2012, this collaborative project brings together Hamilton Library’s Philippine Studies Collection and the Center for Philippine Studies. The project was funded in part by the Luce Foundation, Hamilton Library, and the Center for Philippine Studies. The Center For Philippine Studies

The Center for Philippine Studies (CPS) was originally established as a Program in 1975 by an Act of the Hawai'i State Legislature to recognize the contributions of Filipinos to the history of Hawai'i and to highlight the academic expertise on the Philippines at the University of Hawai'i. The Philippine Studies Collection at Hamilton Library, along with a designated Philippine Studies Librarian, was also established to support the research needs of the Center. Together, these two programs were the first of their kind, reflecting the University’s commitment to advancing Philippine Studies and providing institutional support for research in the field. To this day, they are an internationally recognized source of broad and specialized expertise on a country and people that have had long historical links with the US and the Asia-Pacific region. Its faculty is interdisciplinary, tenure-based in various departments and colleges that offer Philippine courses in history, languages, literature, linguistics, political science, music, Asian studies, ethnic studies, education, geography, anthropology, psychology, sociology, population studies, and economics. The Center has the largest concentration of Philippine academic specialists in the United States, many with international reputations. It also has faculty affiliates from the East-West Center.
