Nursing 452: Cultural Aspects of Health Management in Indigenous Populations

Course Description

The focus of this course is on analysis of cultural perspectives and worldviews that may influence health management of individuals and populations indigenous to Hawaii, the Pacific, and Asia, and exploration of the use and implications of culturally sensitive values strategies and best practices. The emphasis is on identification of intersections between Native Hawaiian and Asian and Pacific islander voice, exploration, and understanding of cultural aspects that influence health management. Culturally sensitive strategies that can promote and improve health management in a multicultural environment will be discussed.


Student Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of this course, students will meet the following learning outcomes:

1. Describe how models and aspects of health management very and intersect among populations indigenous to Hawaii the Pacific and Asia.

2. Explore the beliefs cultures worldviews and values of populations indigenous to Hawaii the Pacific and Asia as they relate to health management.

3. Analyze research relevant to best practices in health management from the perspective of the needs and priorities of populations indigenous to Hawaii, the Pacific, and Asia.

4. Utilize reflection to examine how one's own culture and native experiences influence one's own health management strategies.

5. Examine how the knowledge of cultural aspects of health management can be utilized to develop strategies designed to improve the health and safety outcomes of populations indigenous to Hawaii, the Pacific, and Asia through incorporation of culturally sensitive approaches--core values of healthcare provision and best practices.

6. Analyze the use of management tools and problem-solving approaches to plan population-based health management strategies that incorporate Healthy people 2020 goals.

7. Strategize ways to work effectively with populations indigenous to Hawaii, the Pacific, and Asia in creating a positive environment to promote optimal health and health management.
