Drawing on institutional strengths at the University of Hawai‘i in foreign language teaching, applied linguistics, and second language acquisition, the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) undertakes projects that focus primarily on the less commonly taught languages of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. However, many of its projects have implications for the teaching and learning of all languages. We engage in research and materials development, conduct workshops and conferences for language professionals, and distribute a wide variety of publications on center projects and programs.

NFLRC NetWorks include a variety of publications available via the Internet including websites, annotated bibliographies, and also downloadable PDF documents presenting research reports, conference proceedings, and sample chapters from NFLRC Monographs.

2017 NFLRC Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) Intensive Summer Institute: Pathways to PBLL Evaluation Report
(National Foreign Language Resource Center, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, 2018-10) Hill, Yao
The 2017 NFLRC Intensive Summer Institute (ISI) entitled Pathways to Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL), was conducted from August 2-9, 2017 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In total, sixteen K-16 language educators participated in the six-day institute, representing six different priority languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. This report serves as a summative evaluation through the participants’ End-of-Institute Evaluation Survey with a 100% response rate.

1999 NFLRC Summer Institute Evaluation: “Self-Directed Learning: Materials and Strategies”
(University of Hawaiʻi, Second Language Teaching & Curriculum Center, 1999) Crookes, Graham
The University of Hawaiʻi National Foreign Language Resource Center has been operating for nine years. Each year a Summer Institute (SI) has been run, and it is generally the most intensive and expensive operation in the yearly activities. Although they last only a few weeks, yearly planning for the next one begins almost as soon as the current one has finished, and a great deal of person-power and accumulated expertise goes into the delivery of each Institute. The Advisory Board, as part of its general oversight role considers each year’s Institute as proposed and reviews it upon completion by way of an evaluation report. The present report, then, is directed to the Board1, UH NFLRC Director, and to the Workshop facilitators, as its primary audience (though it is, or will be, a publicly-available document, of interest to other readers as well). The present evaluation report is intended to provide the reader with an accounting of this part of the work of the University of Hawaiʻi NFLRC, through giving a sense of the form and processes of the SI, as well as a providing good faith assessment by an appropriately qualified observer. This year’s Summer Institute was the ninth to date, and was entitled “Self-Directed Learning: Materials and Strategies.” A particular focus, as with past summer institutes at this site, as well as ongoing activities of this NFLRC, was the less-commonly taught languages.

    PERLS Pilot Study Report
(The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center, 2017-08-30) Suvorov, Ruslan
The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate usability of the PERLS (PERvasive Learning System) app and its potential for micro-learning by exploring the nature of Flagship students’ engagement with it, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of its content and technological features, and determining how the app can promote and sustain language learning for both pre- and post-Capstone Flagship students. The pilot study took place during a 2-week period (July 17-August 1, 2017). Participants were 11 pre-Capstone and one post-Capstone Chinese Flagship students who participated in two 30-minute semi-structured interviews conducted at the end of the rst week (Round 1) and at the end of the second week of the pilot study (Round 2). Data obtained from 21 interviews (i.e., 12 interviews from Round 1 and nine interviews from Round 2) were summarily transcribed and qualitatively analyzed to identify emergent themes relevant to the purpose of the pilot study. Based on the analysis of the interview data, this report presents an executive summary of the main ndings and o ers recommendations for improving PERLS.
