On the coevolution of digital transformation and international trade network
    (2025-01-07) Doong, Shing; Hsiao, Ming-Hsiung
Digital transformation (DT) is considered the next major application of information technologies in society and economy. Many experts believe that DT is a key driver to promote international trade. On the other hands, factors like GDP or trade may impact the DT development. In this research, we investigate the relationship between international trade network and DT development of a country through the lens of a longitudinal study. Annual trade network of the 27 EU states from 2017 to 2022 was constructed from import data. The digital economy and society index (EuroStat) was used to surrogate the DT development. Stochastic actor oriented model was used to study the coevolution of trade network and DT development. It is found that trade reciprocity and transitivity existed among EU states, higher DT development tended to shrink import partners pool, and countries tended to import from other states with a similar DT or GDP level.

Contextualizing the Digital Transformation for SMEs - Insights from a Systematic Literature Review
(2025-01-07) Lischke, Linus; Kraft, Tim; Kranz, Johann; Hess, Thomas
Digital transformation (DT) is increasingly vital for organizations navigating the dynamic digital landscape. While its effective management is shaped by its context, the exploration of DT within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) remains underresearched. This study aims to address this gap by examining how SMEs manage DT and identifying the idiosyncrasies of DT in the context of SMEs. The research focuses on the question: How does digital transformation unfold in the context of SMEs? The study makes three significant contributions: First, it contextualizes DT specifically for SMEs. Second, it elaborates on questions for further research to better understand DT in the context of SMEs. Third, we highlight how SMEs' focus on their traditional business affects DT endeavors. Our contribution underscores the necessity for tailored DT approaches in SMEs and provides insights for future research to better understand DT in this specific organizational context.

Digital Transformation and the Implementation of Agile Work in the Financial Services Sector – A Multiple Case Study
(2025-01-07) Schwarzbach, Christoph; Werth, Oliver; Rodríguez Cardona, Davinia; Breitner, Michael H.; Graf Von Der Schulenburg, J.-Matthias
Digital transformation poses challenges for incumbent financial services providers. Agile work methods are implemented as a possible response. Using Work System Theory as the underlying theoretical lens we conducted a holistic multiple case study analysis with a total of 21 interviews from three different financial services companies. This allows us to investigate three implementation journeys: (1) an agile working environment parallel to the traditional organization, (2) a complete business area implementing agile work in a horizontal internal substructure, and (3) agile methods applied in an external workspace. Our interviews indicate that agile work is suitable for traditional financial services providers to organize digital transformation projects within a holistic digitization strategy. New organizational cultures must be open-minded and inclusive toward existing structures. Back-end systems need to be compatible with the developed technologies.
