Item type: Item , Making Sense of Reality: A Mapping of Terminology Related to Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, XR and the Metaverse(2024-01-03) Laato, Samuli; Xi, Nannan; Spors, Velvet; Thibault, Mattia; Hamari, JuhoThe academic research in information systems and neighboring disciplines has produced multiple terms and concepts relating to media-generated ``realities", often called with the umbrella acronym XR denoting either ``extended reality", ``x-reality" or ``cross reality". As new technological solutions and media emerge along with new modalities and forms of interaction, industry and academia come up with new terms, or adopt existing terms (e.g., the metaverse), to describe these concepts. This has resulted in an increase of often partially overlapping terminology and a lack of shared understanding. The aim of this work is twofold: (1) to discover prominent academic XR concepts; and (2) to understand what the concepts describe and how they relate to and differ from each other. We approached these two goals with a bibliometric review technique followed by a narrative review. We discovered 19 unique terms which carried meaning in four areas: as (1) technologies; (2) end user experiences; (3) descriptors of the reality they create; and (4) descriptors of the interactions they afford. Our work offers an overview of the terms currently in circulation and provides a snapshot of the complex space of overlapping definitions and metalanguage.Item type: Item , A Metaverse Typology: Exploring the Role of Immersivity and Centralization in Driving Value Creation(2024-01-03) De Rossi, Leonardo Maria; Abbatemarco, Nico; Diaferia, Lorenzo; Salviotti, GianlucaThe Metaverse has been described as a virtual world characterized by several features, some of which are still subject to investigation. Among these, technological immersivity and content centralization stand out as prominent dimensions that can be configured in different ways, giving rise to distinct types of Metaverses. This paper investigates the interplay between different degrees of technological immersivity and content centralization in the Metaverse and analyzes the consequential effects on value creation mechanisms. By drawing parallels to the existing literature on digital platform ecosystems, the study develops a typology that delineates various Metaverse options based on the two aforementioned dimensions and explores the associated value creation mechanisms. The findings of the paper contribute to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon and its implications for various industries. By uncovering the relationships between immersivity, centralization, and value creation, this study offers valuable perspectives to both scholars and practitioners seeking to understand the vast potential of the Metaverse.Item type: Item , Materializing Design Fictions for Metaverse Services(2024-01-03) Lycett, Mark; Meechao, Krisanee; Reppel, AlexanderAs the state-of-the-art stands, our knowledge of designing Metaverse platforms is limited. In this paper we propose that design fictions are the first form of prototyping and explore how ‘materializing’ a design fiction can help cement or refute assumptions that drive the development of a software-based system toward a first Minimum Viable Product. Our context is a platform for trading music memorabilia in the Metaverse, integrating content sitting across archives, record labels, publishers, and private collections in an immersive and accessible manner. The design fiction provided both a means of exploring the business assumptions of our industry partner and co-creating an experience of value to its intended audience. As key outcomes, the approach was of value in shaping business assumptions, developing an enhanced understanding of the audience and allowing them to co-create, shaping technology needs and identifying partners necessary for the development.Item type: Item , Introduction to the Minitrack on Metaverse(2024-01-03) Christodoulou, Klitos; Themistocleous, Marinos; Da Cunha, Paulo
