Abstract
In recent decades, many Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) schools have experienced fluctuations in student enrollment due to local population shifts. Currently, a number of schools are near or at overcapacity, while others may have enough space but are not used optimally. In many cases, school facilities were not designed to adapt to a fluctuation in student enrollment or to respond to changing or current learning environments. Across the HIDOE, there is a need for a general toolkit that the HIDOE or school can refer to, that demonstrates the process and considerations for optimizing their existing buildings and spaces on campus.The dissertation is organized into three parts, which are as follows: 1) background research, 2) initial research, and 3) design framework and school case study. The focal points of the dissertation are flexibility and adaptability, where space can support various methods of pedagogy and acclimate to future circumstances, enhancing the optimization of the school’s spaces. The dissertation primarily focuses on the HIDOE intermediate/middle schools in the Leeward district of Oahu; however, general information from the HIDOE and United States educational system were researched as context. Part one and two mainly encompass the research of the dissertation. Part one investigates qualitative information, such as the history of the focus schools, past and current strategies used for optimization and typical features of building facilities at HIDOE schools, and literature reviews that address issues of space optimization at a global scale. Part two provides quantitative data, such as statistical information of the focus school’s building facility square footage, usage through scheduling, and student enrollment capacity. Furthermore, part two analyzes educational guidelines and pedagogical practices in both the HIDOE and the United States, in general. Part three develops a design framework, which is then used to demonstrate a design for a case study school. The design framework is developed through an understanding of the practical design process while applying research conducted in parts one and two. Research methods used for the design process for the case study school include site observations, case studies, and experimental and correlational analyses between the current and designed spaces. The goal of the dissertation is to develop and demonstrate a design framework that can be used as a starting point to promote flexibility and adaptability for students and teachers at HIDOE schools.
