Thesis
Abstract Objectives: The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project was to increase pre-treatment pregnancy screening rates by at least 50% from baseline in female patients aged 12 years or older, or who have undergone menarche, who receive teratogenic cancer treatments at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Methods: Staff education, progress updates, and placement of visible reminders within clinics were chosen as cost-effective measures to implement within the study period. Due to program limitations, patient education and templates to document patient education and reminders in the EHR were not pursued. Results: Pre-treatment pregnancy screening rates increased from 40% to 81% (n=16, p=0.00047) on Wilcox Unit (Wilcox) and from 25% to 50% (n=14, p=0.048) for Pediatric Ambulatory Unit (PAU). Staff education increased from 23% (n=23) to 73% (n=11, p=0.0079) for division, 40% (n=6) to 68% (n=7, p=0.13) for Wilcox, and 25% (n=4) to 58% (n=5, p=0.16) for PAU. Conclusion: Staff education, progress updates, and placement of visible reminders within clinics were effective at increasing pre-treatment pregnancy screening rates at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children’s Wilcox and PAU.
