dc.description.abstractThis paper reconsiders one element of Daniel Lerner's theory of the role of mass media in national development--the element that indicts the media for the creation of unachievable aspirations. The author discusses the theory in light of much recent research that is inconsistent with that hypothesis. A final section includes results of a recent field study.
