dc.description.abstractThe history of the Young Ireland nationalist movement of the 1840's is a poorly investigated one. The appeal of the more glamorous history of post-Famine Ireland proves too irresistible for most students of Irish history, and this short-lived, albeit fascinating, movement is largely neglected as a result. A number of those scarce texts that do make mention of the movement do so in highly cursory fashion, paying niggard academic respect to what is widely considered a pre-Famine curiosity. The student interested in Young Ireland is thus forced, for the most part, to consult abridged, dry histories that fail to make critical distinctions apropos the movement and, more important, that overlook important source material. Having had liberal access to the Nation, the cultural journal that served as the foundation of the Young Ireland movement, I feel privileged to offer a comprehensive and well-researched history. I submit this thesis with the hope that my research and presentation of the same will aid in some small way to remedy the deficiencies and lacunae in our understanding of this intriguing nationalist movement.
