dcterms.abstractThis dissertation addresses the issue of housing shortage in Hawaii by analyzing householdtrends and increasing single living. Proposing Micro Unit Apartments as an innovative solution, for the need of market trends and housing needs. The research focuses on Transit Oriented Development also known as TOD in Hawaii, presenting as a new lifestyle to combine live, work and play in the same area. The goal of TOD is to develop a walkable community within the ½ development zone. The purpose of Micro Unit Apartment is to provide affordable housing options for the residents that eliminate the parking requirement. This dissertation explores the relationship between Micro Unit Apartment and Transit OrientedDevelopment area, focusing on how Micro Unit Apartment can benefit from locating in TOD Zones. The paper will examine different case studies and develop guidelines for developing Micro Unit Apartment in TOD zones. The purpose of the guideline is to improve the living quality of the residents in Micro Unit Apartment. The guideline can be applied to many other places, Hawaii, is selected as a case study to test out this guideline.
