Abstract
Background/Significance: Many asthma and COPD patients use their inhaler devices incorrectly, most notably with metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). Additionally, few providers and healthcare professionals provide inhaler education regularly. Improving patient education on correct MDI technique is warranted.
Purpose/Aim:
This project aimed to increase the confidence, satisfaction, and knowledge of participants regarding their MDI use, as well as improve their reported disease control.
Methods/Approach:
Pre-intervention assessments were administered to assess participant confidence and satisfaction with their MDI, their current knowledge, and current reported disease control. MDI education was then given to each participant before their visit via demonstration and verbal instruction, supplemented with an instructional guide and educational handout. Assessments were redistributed post-intervention to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. All assessments showed improvement through a gain in points, except for the COPD Assessment Test, which showed improvement through a loss of points.
Results/Outcomes:
Participants perceived confidence and satisfaction improved by an average gain of 1.6 points. Knowledge of MDI technique improved by an average of 2.4 points and by an increase of 47.8% on the graded posttest. Reported disease control improved by an average gain of 2.1 points for asthma participants, and by an average loss of 2.6 points for COPD participants.
Conclusions:
Implementation of multi-interventional MDI education within an outpatient pulmonary clinic is feasible and improves patient confidence, satisfaction, knowledge of their MDI use, and may also likely contribute to improved reported disease control for asthma and COPD patients.
Implications/Recommendations
This project can extend to other settings, such as primary care clinics and inpatient settings. The effect implementation has on lung function may also be explored.
