Abstract
Kelin Hawk, an expert in the manipulation and control of the elements, earth and fire, has been along time in the making. She and her partner, Phoenix Annalia, came into existence years ago, on the whim of two high school friends who preferred books to sports. Since then, the story these two complemented characters have traveled through has changed in many ways, toned down in some respects, and found a deeper meaning than originally imagined. In the course of writing "Daughter of the Flame," these two women have become more than the mere extensions of my friend and me, the manifestations of our "Wouldn't it be cool if we were..." and "I wonder what it would be like if we could do this..." Kelin and Phoenix have come into their own, although Kelin has taken a decidedly more prominent role in this story, the first, one hopes, of more to come. Issues of gender, politics and religion have infused themselves within the story, regardless of my intentions. The knowledge of how to build a world, naturally garnered from reading countless fantasy novels, has been aided by research into the Middle Ages, particularly medieval England, and turns a fictional land into a believable world filled with real people rather than flat characters. It took years for the various aspects of writing to evolve into "Daughter of the Flame." Kelin and Phoenix developed from a single page of fantastical notes and a few pages of an aimless dialogue and exposition into a full-length fantasy novel about magic-users whose fates lie in the memory of a single mage. Kelin, a woman with an immense amount of power, but who is weakened by her own insecurities, must now overcome the horrors of her past before she can save her present, and her future.
