Gendered Orality: Women's Mediation of Pidgin and the Body in Saturday Night at the Pahala Theater

Abstract

The difference between the Local and the non-Local is often deceivingly clear-cut-the 17- year-old Filipino Farrington High School student: Local. The haole military family from Iowa stationed at Schofield: non-Local. Definitely. In a deeper analysis of the status of being Local, however, gray areas appear. Factors other than the knowledge of things Local delineate the difference between "insiders" and "outsiders" in Hawai'i. Indeed, Barry Masuda, a resident of Hawai'i for "twenty-two years[s], two month[s]" (81) freely admits his doubts about his own status: "I'm probably not a 'real Local'" (81).
