The research discussed in this thesis was an extension of work originally conducted by Kametani, Sugahara, and Yagi on derivatives of 3,4-dihydronaphthalene (1). The reaction that was singled out for careful analysis entailed heating 2-nitro-1-tetralone oxime (IV) in polyphosphoric acid (82-84% P205) at moderately high temperatures. The workers isolated three products in sufficient yield to al low identification of each as an isomer with the common molecular formula of C10HgN2O2. However, only two o£ the isomers, (V) and (VII), were isolated in sufficient quanti ty to allow further study of structure, derivatives, and reactivity.
