dc.description.abstract The major focus of this paper is why the research carried out in the Taiwan family planning program had an effect on the planned program of social change--both in the productive integration of research findings into national action programs and in the dissemination of these ideas to other Asian countries. The five studies selected for discussion are intended to illustrate some of the factors related to why family planning research was used--or not used-- -in Taiwan. At the end of the five case studies is a summary of the factors that assisted or hindered research utilization throughout the history of Taiwan's family planning program and an analysis of some of the especially favorable factors in the Taiwan situation.
