Abstract
The carbonic acid produced by the microbial oxidation of organic
matter is the most important chemical weathering agent of the Hawaiian basaltic
rocks. The total denudation rate of the Hawaiian Islands ranges from 11 to 50
mg/cm2 /yr (or 0.04-0.19 mm/yr), The island of Hawaii has the lowest denudation
rate among the Hawaiian Islands.
