Abstract
Deep Time uses paint and handmade paper pulp to envision an environment where geologic deep time is observed not only in natural phenomena, but also mythology, mo’olelo, and memory. The installation consists of a monumental 24 foot painting on paper with layers of suggested (and process oriented) material landscapes. Five sculptural paper columns refer to the ancient notion of axis mundi, with contemporary renditions such as lava trees and urban utility poles. Each component holds an interconnected material, cultural, and personal history that utilizes a geologic perspective to foster a sense of deep time within the human experience.
