Abstract
Description
Michael John Ikeda was born on November 24, 1951 at Kapiolani Hospital. He lived in Mānoa, Hawaiʻi where the East-West Center building stands on the UH Mānoa campus. Mike Ikedaʻs father Isamu Ikeda, worked for the University of Hawaiʻi’s LiveStock Experiment Station in Waialeʻe, Hawai’i. Uncle Mike shares his childhood memories growing up on the station, his father’s work, and recalls some of the influential kûpuna that impacted his life. In this interview he discusses his family background, growing up on the station with the other working families, and recalls fond memories with his childhood friends, along with his memories of the ocean and agricultural resources. Ikeda joined the Army National Guard after High School, became a mechanic for the City and County of Honolulu, and later discussed his work with the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Center.
