Abstract
Ineffective communication and teamwork cost the United States healthcare industry billions of dollars in preventable errors and sentinel events. This has led to poor clinical outcomes contributing to a lack of trust and confidence in the healthcare profession. To counter these concerns, it is imperative for the healthcare industries to develop effective communication strategies to improve communication between the healthcare team, patients, and families. In 2006, the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) collaborated with the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop an evidenced-based comprehensive training tool called Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) with the focus of addressing patient safety, improving clinical outcomes, and transforming healthcare towards a culture of safety. TeamSTEPPS is based on 20 years of evidenced-based research that is adaptable and customizable to any healthcare or academic setting. The purpose of this evidence-based initiative is to identify whether the reinforcement of TeamSTEPPS training impacts teamwork and team dynamics compared to the current practice of one-time training. The Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Excellence in Healthcare will be used as the framework to guide this change in practice.
