dc.description.abstractThe era of technology began making tremendous advance­ ments at the turn of the twentieth century. Along with these rapid technological improvements, the intrastructure of many organizations began increasing in size and complexity. Increases in the labor force and in management responsibilities, led to the specialization of the various components within the organizations. These specializations often created conflict­ing interests and goals between the components, giving way to a weakening of the entire organic structure. Inevitably, it became necessary to develop sophisticated methods, whereby the allocation of available resources, to each specialized component of the organization, was met, in a way that was most beneficial for the entire operation. These methods then became the basic constituents for the emergence and development of the field known as operations research.
