ItemThe Role of Information Technology in Fintech Innovation: Insights from the European Fintech Ecosystem( 2021-01-05)Fintech is an active area of innovation and a rapidly growing sector of the economy, yet relatively little is known about how information technology contributes to innovation in fintech. We draw on the business model canvas framework and we examine the role of information technology in the business models of leading European fintech startups. We find that information technology plays a key role across nearly all components of the fintech business models that we reviewed, orchestrating resources and processes to efficiently deliver personalized financial services to customers. Focusing on the IT-enabled value propositions across the fintech startups in our sample, we find that the startups tend to emphasize low-cost offerings that may pose a threat to incumbent business models in financial services.

ItemOutstanding Employees Performance: Personality Traits, Innovation and Knowledge Management( 2021-01-05)This paper analyzes the relationship among outstanding employees’ personality traits, innovation and performance. It stems from Motowidlo, Borman, & Schmit's theory of performance, which distinguishes between task and contextual performance, leading to personal job success and creativity. The innovative paired sample is composed of both, 189 outstanding employees and their supervisors, and 182 common employee control group. Findings show that agreeableness and extraversion are significant correlated to contextual behavior. The present paper contribution is that it enlightens for the first time the relationship the above-mentioned performance. This in turn can be employed as an assessment tool which can assist Human Resources units in obtaining strategic knowledge of its employees for proactive management of their innovative knowledge assets, for better systematic management of organizational knowledge.

ItemLinking Information Technology and Entrepreneurship: A Literature Review( 2021-01-05)This study reviews research carried out in the domain of IT and entrepreneurship. A total of 907 papers, published between 1978 and 2020 were used to uncover the latent topics addressed in the domain. A topic modeling (LDA) algorithm was used to automate the process of extracting the initial research topics from the data. The literature review further enhances the understating of IT-associated entrepreneurship research, providing useful insights for future research and informs practice in this domain of study.

ItemEmerging innovation patterns in digital agriculture: A study of 198 digital solutions from 116 startups( 2021-01-05)To tackle humanity's food challenge, agricultural companies need to exploit technological advancements by innovating their business models. Solution business model patterns (SBMPs) play a central role in business model innovation. However, the current literature on SBMPs is outdated and has not been adapted for the field of agriculture. By analyzing 198 digital solutions from 116 agriculture startups, we identify 18 SBMPs, nine of which have not been identified in any previous research. We thus significantly expand the existing literature on SBMPs and outline the technological drivers of emerging SBMPs. Furthermore, putting the 18 identified SBMPs into the context of agriculture will help agricultural companies innovate their business models. Three SBMPs with high potential to tackle humanity’s food challenges are further discussed.

Item32 ways to innovate business models through data: Emerging data-driven solution business model patterns from a study of 471 late stage data-driven startups( 2021-01-05)Solution business model patterns, which describe solutions to recurring business problems, play a central role in business innovation as 90% of business model innovations are recombinations of solution business model patterns. Research so far has only identified seven data-driven solution business model patterns limited to revenue models in data-driven services. We have systematically analyzed 471 late stage, data-driven startups, identifying 32 data-driven solution business model patterns. We categorized them along the nine business model building blocks from the business model canvas of Osterwalder and Pigneur. A framework that is often used by practitioners in business model innovation projects. This paper significantly expands the research conducted on data-driven solution business model patterns. Furthermore, the identified data-driven solution business model patterns will support practitioners in data-driven business model innovation.
