Smart Waste Collection Processes - A Case Study about Smart Device Implementation
( 2020-01-07) Kamm, Michael ; Gau, Michael ; Schneider, Johannes ; Vom Brocke, Jan
For decades the core processes of collecting waste have been unchanged. Through new IoT-technologies, advances in sensors, and data transfer technologies, data-driven smart waste collection processes will replace old inefficient collection processes. Causing a shift from fix collection intervals to collection on demand, supported by smart algorithms and innovative web-applications. However, implementing such ideas come along with some almost insurmountable challenges related to wireless data transfer, battery lifetime and IoT infrastructure. Therefore, the question arises of how to implement IoT solutions in such complex and challenging environments. In order to contribute to the existing research about smart cities and autonomous IoT devices, we implemented smart devices in glass containers, measuring filling level over several months. The research study’s outcomes are test results, data analysis and a prototype implementation for a reengineered waste collection process. Furthermore, we identified main challenges and key issues which obstruct the implementation and spread of such smart city applications.

Analysing FIWAREs Platform - Potential Improvements
    ( 2020-01-07) Detzner, Peter ; Salhofer, Peter
The digitalization of the world proceeds continuously. As part of this, we are facing a smart digital future where everything is connected and linked while we are transforming big data into knowledge. The FIWARE platform, which is the result of a series of EU funded projects, supports this transformation. Developers, integrators and end users are able to rapidly create new applications, by using components provided by this platform. We have analyzed central building blocks of the FIWARE platform from different aspects and based on experiments and code reviews - identified various areas of improvements. Our analysis also provides some recommendations for the current code base that can help to improve those FIWARE components under investigation.

A Cloud-based Analytics-Platform for User-centric Internet of Things Domains – Prototype and Performance Evaluation
( 2020-01-07) Zschörnig, Theo ; Windolph, Jonah ; Wehlitz, Robert ; Franczyk, Bogdan
Data analytics have the potential to increase the value of data emitted from smart devices in user-centric Internet of Things environments, such as smart home, drastically. In order to allow businesses and end-consumers alike to tap into this potential, appropriate analytics architectures must be present. Current solutions in this field do not tackle all of the diverse challenges and requirements, which were identified in previous research. Specifically, personalized, extensible analytics solutions, which still offer the means to address big data problems are scarce. In this paper, we therefore present an architectural solution, which was specifically designed to address the named challenges. Furthermore, we offer insights into the prototypical implementation of the proposed concept as well as an evaluation of its performance against traditional big data architectures.

A Concept of Innovation Hub for Smart Applications, Enabling Pro-active Approach to Urban Policy and Planning Processes
    ( 2020-01-07) Mazurek, Cezary ; Stroinski, Maciej
In recent years, the question of how to develop smart applications in environments where solutions already exist has become a challenge for many trends of technological transformation e.g. in industry, transport or smart cities. The latter trend is additionally very sensitive because of the social dimension of the impact of transformation, where the human being should be in the centre of attention. In this paper we present the concept of the Innovation Hub in Poznań, which is a framework for digital transformation focused on integration and development towards proactive digital city system. Starting from the pillars of the digital transformation, i.e. the City Development Strategy and existing well-functioning smart city components, we justify the evolutionary model of transformation by creating favorable conditions for the implementation of Proof of Concept projects with the active participation of residents. In addition, we point out examples of projects that were linked to decision-making processes.

A Hybrid Approach of Modular Planning – Synchronizing Factory and Building Planning by Using Component based Synthesis
( 2020-01-07) Graefenstein, Julian ; Winkels, Jan ; Lenz, Lisa ; Weist, Kai ; Krebil, Kevin ; Gralla, Mike
The more and more rising complexity of the industrial environment is triggering companies in a way that is more challenging than ever before. Not only are factory planning projects difficult to handle because of the dynamics and complexity also the necessary planning of the accompanied building gets more and more difficult. To handle this complexity and reduce time and effort for planning as a major factor of success the mainly separately done planning aspects needs to be synchronized. This paper will show an approach of a hybrid factory-building planning method in order to be able to shorten planning time and effort. By using a constraint solving technique the necessary planning tasks are aligned partly automatically and will be processed as a useful planning workflow in form of a gantt diagram for the overall project management.
