|Title:||The Music of a Breaking Window: A Collection of Fiction|
|Issue Date:||15 Jan 2014|
|Publisher:||University of Hawaii at Manoa|
|Abstract:||When I tell people that I want to be a writer, they often say that I am in a dying business. They remind me that the "fiction writer" is an old, old occupation, much like the cobblers and sword smiths of yesterday. What people want now is the flash and bang, the visual and aesthetic appeal. They want whiz-jets and explosions. Text is too boring, too tame. If I really do want to write, they suggest I try my hand at screenplays or directing films. It's just like writing, they say, only with real action, with scenes you don't have to imagine.|
