During 1969, a survey of the environmental resources of Guadalcanal’s Weather Coast was undertaken as part of a Protectorate-wide survey to assess the land resources and their potential. One result of this fieldwork was a sense that it might be an incipient problem area from the standpoint of the relationship between natural resources and population. This concern resulted in a survey of the Weather Coast that was undertaken from September 1972 to January 1973 under the auspices of the East West Population Institute. The overall purpose was to investigate in detail the population resource systems of the region, and to assess the extent to which they were functional and susceptible to change.
