Field Methods Class, 2020-2021: Bua Fijian
Permanent URI for this collection
These Bua Fijian materials were collected remotely over Zoom during the 2020-2021 Field Methods sequence at UHM. Most of the recordings are of one speaker, Ms. Sisilia Gravelle.
Bua is a Fijian language spoken in Bua province of Vanua Levu, Fiji. Bua is mutually intelligible with Standard Fijian. Bua is not one of the official languages of Fiji, which are Standard Fijian (iTaukei), Fiji Hindi, and English. Ms. Sisilia Gravelle has observed a decrease in Bua speakers recently. There are reclamation efforts currently taking place.
The materials archived in this collection include elicitation sessions covering grammatical, phonological, and phonetic topics, primary texts, and a conversation. Transcriptions, notes, and stimuli are included, in addition to a children's short story translated into Bua.
