    Utilizing Graphic Design Principles for Effective Outreach and Education

    Social media platforms are a growing network intended initially for digital communication, with more functions such as job-seeking, online dating, and advertising. Each platform has its unique algorithm and user base based on its services. For organizations such as the Waikīkī Aquarium, dedicated to marine conservation, social media is a crucial platform for advertisement, outreach, and education. Social media algorithms are dynamic and change directly based on the content a user posts. If appropriately done by adhering to a specific target audience, an algorithm can be boosted, making posts more likely to be seen by non-followers. However, it is imperative that content is consistently evaluated by social media managers and is altered to fit emerging trends. Here, we analyze several graphic design elements and their successes on Instagram and compare daily, scheduled posting on Facebook to sporadic, staggered posting on Instagram. The results from combinations of design elements were inconclusive, likely due to the small sample size. The successes and failures of certain elements had many possible explanations, making the predictability of future design elements challenging to gauge. The results from daily, scheduled posting compared to staggered, sporadic posting were more coherent, suggesting that staggered posting leads to greater overall reach and content interactions.
