A survey to inform the University of Hawai‘i dendrobium breeding program revealed that varietal improvement for the mass market should focus on compact growth (less than 3 feet overall plant height, or 2 feet pseudobulb height), early flowering, full flowers, and an array of color.

Much interest was aroused by successful plantings of tea at sites on the island of Hawai‘i (2800 and 4000 ft elevation). The publication details types of tea, propagation, field planting, pruning and harvesting, pests and diseases, and a small-batch processing method.

New high-yielding taro cultivars resulted from a cross between taro leaf blight susceptible ‘Maui Lehua’ and a blight resistant cultivar from Palau. The licensing agreement mentioned in the publication no longer applies, as the university has released the cultivars into the public domain.

It describes the transformed University of Hawai‘i cultivars, their cultivation and marketing concerns, and addresses questions about food safety.
Evaluation of University of Hawaii Anthurium Accessions, 1986–2001

Since 1986 the University of Hawaii at Manoa anthurium breeding and research program has received 189 plant accessions from the Missouri Botanical Gardens and various other sources in the Netherlands, Latin America, and elsewhere. Of these, 49 accessions were evaluated for spathe and spadix width, length, and color, flower yield, and other characteristics such as disease resistance. The results should be useful for anthurium breeding, research, and germplasm programs.
'Maggie Inouye' and 'Mini Gem' Anthuriums

‘Maggie Inouye’ is a new light pink, tulip-type anthurium variety (UH1141). This novelty cut flower selection arose from a complex cross, involving several different species of Anthurium, that gave rise to lavender siblings ‘ARCS’ and ‘ARCS Hawaii’. The resulting flower is resistant to anthracnose and does not reflex as much as ‘ARCS’. ‘Mini Gem’ (UH1207) is a miniature purple from a cross between a sibling of lavender ‘ARCS’ and A. amnicola intended for novelty potted plant production.
‘Princess Aiko’ (‘Imperial’) and ‘Regina’, Two Novelty Anthuriums

Anthurium ‘Princess Aiko’ (UH1299) is a new, sweet scented, multipurpose cultivar. It is high yielding with bright, long lasting flowers carried above dark green foliage. Anthurium ‘Regina’ has a unique large purple flower similar in shape (lateral tulip) to ‘Princess Aiko’.
