The Solomon Islands villagers like so many of their Pacific island cousins have become preoccupied with the idea of "development." Unfortunately, development as conventionally practiced has brought various types of underdevelopment: village decay, flight to the city, and dangerous social and economic inequalities. However, there is another way to understand the development process. This dissertation takes development to mean the transformation of humankind's consciousness--a spiritual, cultural and political issue and only secondarily an economic question.
